Determination of fat in milk and dairy products
The traditional fat extraction methods are very labor- and time-intensive. Large amounts of solvents must be used to remove fat from the sample matrix, resulting in very high operating costs.
A conventional fat extraction of pretreated cheese typically requires 3 hours and more than 100 ml of solvent per sample, which is neither time- nor cost-effective. Additionally, laboratory personnel are exposed to hazardous solvents.
To overcome these limitations, Milestone has developed a fast yet precise microwave-based technology that allows the operator to perform total fat determination of 12 milk and dairy products in parallel in just 90 minutes, achieving results comparable to those obtained with reference methods.
One of the groundbreaking aspects of this method is that hydrolysis and extraction occur in one and the same step.
